Dressing in separates is HARD. I usually gravitate toward dresses because it requires so much less thought: Dress. Jacket. Shoes. Done. When putting separates together, you have to consider so many other things beyond whether or not the colors match. Beautiful things can look awful together.
But, in effort number 10 bazillion of me trying to better myself, I am working on separates. Above is one look I put together with a skirt from Abercrombie & Fitch and two tops from Intermix. I love both of these tops separately, but they work together too, and this black top is just amazing the slits on the sides mean it lays nicely over an A-line skirt. Add my Sergio Rossi boots to anything, and Voila! I dressed my self in separates!
To dress well in separates, my advice is simple: collect simple A-line skirts and skinny pants that go from day to night and can be worn with any tops and shoes. Then, look for basic tops, like a white button down, a black crop or a tunic like the one above. No-fuss tops can be stacked and paired with items of various colors and seasons.
And don't be afraid to get creative. This white top is actually a crop, but who cares! You could even stack a top over a bra, a dress or the camisole of your pajamas set. If something doesn't lay perfectly or won't stay put, use pins, tape or thread to temporarily make your separates get along. My outfits frequently would look crazy if you turned them inside out, but you wouldn't, so again, who cares. Show some ingenuity and take a little extra time to pull off an outfit that's more special than just another well-fitting dress. You'll look amazing and show yourself to be more advanced in your fashionista game.
